The Nokia Lumia 1020, the reviews are in

Much has been said about the prospects of the Nokia Lumia 1020, Nokia’s first smartphone with PureView imaging technology running Windows Phone. Is it enough to save the company? Does it make sense in an age of users who arguably couldn’t care less about having photography features? Did it reach sentience and is actually responsible for the horrible writing in last season’s Downton Abbey finale?

Ok, we joke about that last one. Seriously, with so much riding on the back of the Lumia 1020, we thought it would be a good idea to collect some of the more notable reviews of the device for you.

The Verge

“A remarkable phone, hampered by its operating system”

Gizmodo

“Now is also a good time for your standard Windows Phone 8 caveat. It’s getting better, it’s still not there. There are still plenty of apps you will miss, there are still lots of hiccups that don’t make sense. That should get better soon, when Windows Phone 8.1 rolls out. But that could be a longer wait than you’re prepared for.”

Engadget

“We’ve been waiting a long time for the 808 PureView to get a Windows Phone counterpart with the same (if not better) imaging prowess. Finally, it’s here. Now that we’ve had the opportunity to use the device, we can confidently say that the Lumia 1020 is the best Windows Phone device to date. If you’re a WP8 user who enjoys crafting the best possible photographs, you need to make the jump, even if you are paying for a premium for the camera.”

As with most Windows Phone devices the consensus seems to be that the camera on the Nokia Lumia 1020 is every bit as amazing as Nokia made it out to be at its press event a few weeks ago. Despite that, it is running Windows Phone and so each review is filled with complaints about how “incomplete” Windows Phone 8 itself feels.

The Nokia Lumia 1020 is available from AT&T for $299 with a two-year service contract.
