If you’d have asked us what we hoped the next new app coming to Microsoft’s Xbox One console would be, we’d have told you we hoped it was an app for Time Warner’s HBO Go video service or even the TuneIn radio app we’ve been eyeing on other platforms for years. This morning Microsoft threw a complete curveball at Xbox One users. It didn’t announce the arrival of HBO Go or TuneIn, but it did reveal ReddX, an app that allows users to interact with the Reddit community directly from their Xbox One.
As revealed on Xbox Wire the app is pretty robust. In addition to a full screen experience users can look up their favorite subreddits and catch up on any posts they missed with ReddX snapped to the side of their screen. Users can up vote or down downvote topics straight from the app and add their own comments using the Xbox One SmartGlass app instead of the on-screen keyboard.
Joining ReddX is MTV for Xbox One, a new app that’ll finally let owners of Microsoft’s latest console catch up on all the episodes of Wild N Out, Teen Moms 2, and Virgin Territory. Watching full episodes of any of those shows requires a subscription with a cable or satellite company who has a partnership with MTV. Outside of that, the app also provides video news updates.
Finally, Twitch is getting an update today. This upgraded version of Twitch will decentralize audio recording from the Kinect 2 sensor. In short, owners of the Xbox One without a Kinect 2 sensor will have the option to record audio from the console’s chat headset. A new Watch With Friends area will help users keep track of the Twitch streams their friends are enjoying.
Microsoft says Reddx and MTV should be available in the Xbox Store immediately. Users who already have Twitch downloaded to their Xbox One will be prompted to update it the next time they open it — provided they don’t have background app updates enabled.
