We’ve hoped to get our hands on the new Media app and updated Friends area for the Xbox One ever since Microsoft announced them this past Monday at its Gamescom 2014 Xbox Media Briefing. If you have too, you’re starting the weekend with a win. Microsoft says late last night it began deploying the September Xbox One Update to users participating in the Xbox One Preview Program.
Microsoft announced the outgoing updates on its Xbox Wire news blog, and it contains almost all the features the company said would be rolling out over the next few months. Joining the new Media Player app, which lets users play content from a flash drive or external hard drive, is the option to boot the Xbox One and have it go directly to the Live TV app, a refreshed Live TV guide that takes over the bottom of user’s screens, a bandwidth meter and the ability to delete multiple video clips from GameDVR.
In addition to what we already knew were coming there are a few extras. SmartGlass is being updated to allow users to post new Xbox Live statuses directly from it. Comments and Sharing have been added to the app too along with a refreshed messages app that adds threads so you can see an entire conversation easily.
Members of the Xbox One Preview Program should find that their console automatically prompts them to download the September Xbox One Update over the next few days. The Xbox One will update in the background if the console’s low-power mode is enabled.
