With Microsoft lowering the barrier to entry on creating applications for the Windows Phone platform, almost anyone can fire up Visual Studio and create games and applications that might become popular. What separates those applications that have the opportunity to go gangbusters and those that certainly will sell faster than umbrellas in Seattle isn’t as easy to Xerox. It comes down to a few factors. Name recognition never hurts of course, neither does compelling gameplay but in my opinion doing something unique is always key.
This week we’ve got a few of my favorite one-of-a-kind titles for Windows Phone.
We begin this week with what is still one of my favorite games on any Microsoft platform, Kinectimals. Sure we’ve mentioned it before, and believe me it’s still just as awesome, especially since it now includes a new Live Tile option to keep you updated on how your cat cubs are fairing while you are off doing something else. It’s still incredibly addictive and $1.99 with a free trial.
One of the most curious applications to be debut in the Windows Phone Marketplace has to be Kinect Star Wars. If anything involving using your device in conjunction with the console version of Kinect Star Wars came to mind, let me stop you right there. It doesn’t. It’s actually a social networking application that pulls information from your Facebook and Twitter accounts then displays them in the style of the opening titles to the Star Wars movies. Nope, I didn’t see that one coming either.
Lastly we have an app both unique in name and rare in counterparts on the Windows Phone Marketplace. BeGood1 Soft’s Purple Cherry allows you to upload your favorite Gameboy pocket games to SkyDrive and play them on your device. It’s really that simple. While the application doesn’t yet include support for sound I’ve got to give credit where credit is due. The developer managed to come up with completely random name, create an application that very few developers can get working on a device and certified in the marketplace, and uncomplicated loading ROMs. Purple Cherry will set you back $1.29.
