Fresh off its quest to get Quantum Break into the hands of the waiting masses, Microsoft Studios has more big news for owners of its Xbox One console. With a release date set in October, Microsoft plans to book-end its line-up of exclusive games with Gears of War 4.
The company formally confirmed the Gears of War 4 release this morning in a post on its Xbox Wire news blog. The game will debut just ahead of the holiday shopping season on October 11th. By launching in October, Microsoft is steering clear of big-name games from third-party publishers, mainly the next yearly release of Call of Duty. Beyond confirming the release, the company teamed up with Entertainment Weekly to reveal Gear of War 4’s cover art and pieces that inspired the game’s visuals. Elsewhere developer The Collation confirmed that Gears of War 4 has split-screen multiplayer.
Gears of War 4 is more important than any other exclusive Microsoft will deliver this year. It’s a ridiculously loved third-person shooter filled with aliens, blood and violence. In short, it’s a direct polar opposite to Microsoft’s biggest gaming franchise, Halo. The game focuses on JD Fenix, the son of Marcus Fenix from the first set of games. Microsoft purchased the Gears of War franchise from original developer Epic Games.
The Gears of War 4 multiplayer beta is set for April 18th on the Xbox One. Gears of War Ultimate Edition owners get early access to that beta.
