Among the rumors of Microsoft killing off the device and closing down Zune Originals some people were starting to think the rumors were true. Maybe this will change their minds. The Zune HD has an optional firmware update. While no specifics are known quite yet, by the the version number it is just a bug fix. Either way, it shows us (okay, maybe only me) that Microsoft has not forgotten about the Zune HD.. yet.

So plug in your device and run the update… and let us know if you find anything different. It should update from 4.5(109) to 4.5(114).

Update
Seems it’s only a security update to fix a vulnerability found in the web browser. That’s according to the Business Developer for the Zune HD, Dave McLauglan.

  1. So far, I can’t tell much of a difference between 114 and 109. I mean, the transition between Pins/History and the Menu seem a tad snappier, but that’s stretching it a bit.

Apparently, it’s just a security certificate update. Same thing that went out for WP7 a couple of months ago.

  2. Got it quite by accident when my HD stopped syncing. Put it into recovery and got the update. Also allowed me to clean up with only 1 gig available. Looking though to pick up a 64 before they disappear and hoping WP7 ramps up memory or include card slots. Maybe the cloud will make all this moot.
