I misjudged JJ Abrams. After seeing the Star Trek universe utterly decimated in its first reboot film, Star Trek, I decided that I wanted no part of the director’s version of the franchise. Gone were the ethical dilemmas of characters like Jean-Luc Picard. Missing was the under-stated drama and what some refer to as “smart talk.” In my opinion, they’d been replaced with flashy graphics and pretty actors. So naturally, I avoided Star Trek: Into Darkness fearing that it was more like its immediate predecessor than other Star Trek films.

To be clear, I was wrong.

Don’t misunderstand me, everything is still overly stylized. The difference here is that Zachary Quinto, Chris Pine and Zoe Seldana have grown into their roles much more. Simply put, I didn’t just enjoy this film. I enjoyed this film more than I have every movie in the franchise except for Star TrekFirst Contact. Like action? Like suspense? Like Star Trek? Star Trek: Into Darkness is available for rental in Xbox Video and the iTunes Movie Store.
