Microsoft, makers of the all-in-one entertainment powerhouse known as the Xbox One, is delivering on its promise to offer a dedicated digital TV tuner so that owners of the console can watch live television without having to pay for a cable subscription.
Microsoft announced the Hauppauge Digital TV Tuner for Xbox One on Xbox Wire this morning. Hauppauge and Microsoft are teaming up to offer two versions of the tuner. The $59.99 package will only include the TV tuner itself. Xbox One owners connect the digital TV tuner to their console using the USB port. Both Amazon and Microsoft’s own retail stores will carry this model eventually. The Microsoft Store has it online for order already. A second bundle only being sold at Microsoft’s retail stores includes a digital antenna to go along with the digital TV tuner. Users need an antenna to pick up the broadcast channels in their area.
Besides watching through the TV app on the Xbox One, users who pick up the Hauppauge Digital TV Tuner for Xbox One can also stream content to their Xbox SmartGlass equipped iPhone, iPad and Android device. Microsoft released a dedicated Xbox One Digital TV Tuner of its own last year, but it only works outside of North America.
