Microsoft is giving Xbox One owners one less reason to resist the Gears of War Ultimate Edition title it has planned for release later in August. Anyone who purchases Gears of War Ultimate Edition on release date or for months after will get past entries in the series absolutely free.

Microsoft announced the free games included with Gears of War Ultimate Edition in a post on Xbox Wire this morning. We already knew that $30 would get Xbox One owners a graphically enhanced version of the game on their console, complete with access to the Gears of War 4 beta. Until today we didn’t know that digital Xbox 360 copies of Gears of War, Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3 and Gears of War: Judgement were included in the purchase price.

Gears of War Ultimate Edition’s launch date is August 25th. Anyone who picks up the game between then and December 31st gets the free downloads. Backward compatibility allows users to unlock digital versions of their Xbox 360 games by just putting in their original disc. Today the feature is only available to members of the Xbox Preview Program. It’ll roll out to everyone sometime relatively soon.

Microsoft plans to give Fallout 4 a free digital copy of Fallout: New Vegas in a similar deal.
